Need some hiking equipment? I suggest to check out "Bergzeit"

Hikes are an excellent way of exploring a beautiful country or region. Whether you bring your drone or not, you are likely to be able to take stunning pictures along the way. Often, in the mountains, drone pictures are not even better than regular pictures taken with your professional camera or phone camera. The reason is that while hiking in the mountains, you are already on high altitude and the views you get look like aerial views while actually being on the ground. On top of taking awesome pictures from many lookout points, hiking increase your general health and endurance. So pick your preferred hike and go for it! Don't overdo it though and stick with what is possible for you. Below we describe all the hikes we have done in beautiful Switzerland, all with gorgeous views from various lookout points along the way! We are sure you are going to enjoy!

Type: Go and come back the same way

Start: Brunni Talstation

End: Brunni Talstation

How did we get there: Public transportation (less than 2 hours from Zurich)

  • Train: Zürich HB - Wädenswil

  • Train: Wädenswil - Einsiedeln

  • Bus: Einsiedeln - Brunni Talstation

Parking: Available at the Brunni Talstation (same place as bus stop)

How long: Total hike including breaks approx. 5 hours

  • 2 hours to go

  • 1.5 hours to 2 hours to come back

  • Break time 1 hour to 1.5 hours

How difficult:

  • First 40 min slight ascent (not very difficult) until Holzegg

  • Second 1 hour 20 minutes moderate to steep ascent until the peak

  • When hiking slowly, also without perfect condition, you can manage

Optional: A cable car can be taken from the parking/bus stop until Holzegg (reduces the length of the hike by approx. 40 min). I recommend to walk all the way as this first part is a very enjoyable, not very steep one. It goes through beautiful fields and trees with great views up to Grosser Mythen.

Tips:

  • Bring a T-Shirt to change (you may need it after the ascent to the peak)

  • Take the cable car on the way back (down from Holzegg to the parking/bus stop) if you have difficulties hiking downhill (however that part is less steep)

  • Try the legendary "Mythen Nuss- und Mandelgipfeli" sold at the top

Grosser Mythen from Brunni

Canton of Schwyz

Hiking route

#1

Grosser Mythen

Sämtisersee, Fälensee (Bollenwees)

Alpstein, Canton of Appenzell

Type: Go and come back the same way (partly possible loop)

Start: Brülisau

End: Brülisau

How did we get there: Car (1 hour 20 min from Zurich)

Parking: Available at Brülisau center as well as approx. 1 km after Brülisau (tell the parking officer that you want to continue until the end of the road to Luftseilbahn Alpsigel, there is another parking, saving approx. 15 min walking each way)

Public transportation:

  • Train: Zürich HB - Gossau SG

  • Train: Gossau SG - Weissbad

  • Bus: Weissbad - Brülisau (Kastenbahn)

How long: Total hike including breaks approx. 6 hours

  • 1 hour to go until Sämtisersee

  • Another 1 hour to continue until Fälensee

  • Approx. same time to go back (steep downhill takes time)

  • Break time 2 hours (partly at Sämtisersee, partly at Fälensee)

How difficult:

  • First 1 hour steep ascent through the forest on a road until Plattenbödeli cottage (take the unpaved path at an intersection which is easier to walk up)

  • Second 1 hour moderate ascent (partly flat) until Fälensee

  • When hiking slowly, also without perfect condition, you can manage

Optional: Only hike until Sämtisersee (which is a pity though as the path between Sämtisersee and Fälensee is much nicer than the first part from Brülisau to Sämtisersee and the view from Bollenwees over Fälensee is gorgeous)

Tips:

  • Do the loop between Sämtisersee and Fälensee/Bollenwees instead of walking both ways the same path (turn right at intersection at Tannhütte)

  • Take the path across the field, directly down to Sämtisersee, right after the Plattenbödeli cottage and walk the road upwards when going back

  • Bring swimming shorts if you're brave enough to take a dip at Fälensee
