3 nights Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Nowhere compares to the lagoon and beaches of Aitutaki, but Rarortonga is definitely still worth a stay of at least 2 full days. Drive around by scooter (no place is more than 40 min away). You may want to relax at Muri Beach or do a hike towards The Needle, a bizarre mountain rock formation. We just love the shape and lush green colours of the volcanic mountains - so typical for South Pacific islands. Check accommodation options on AirBnB!

4 nights in Aitutaki, Cook Islands

Aitutaki is THE island paradise you have always dreamt about! The lagoon is amazing, as beautiful as the one of Bora Bora (some say they like it even more). Do at least one (better two) day trips to the southern motus. One Foot Island island is a must visit! I recommend to stay at Aitutaki Village (if you're on a low to medium budget) - the location is superb and you can borrow one of their kayaks to go to nearby motus. Also don't miss a scooter rental for one day and drive around the island and walk up to the lookout point at Mount Maungapu with its gorgeous view.

3 nights in Matamanoa, Fiji

Matamanoa Island is a small, hilly island, about 1 hour by high speed ferry from Denarau Marina. We have booked the ferry tickets with South Sea Cruises and if you are airlines staff, I suggest to contact Matamanoa Island Resort for a special discounted "travel industry rate" - they gave us a really good deal fitting into our budget. Write them using reservations@matamanoa.com. The resort is amazing. It has a beautiful beach and the staff are heartwarmingly nice. Don't miss a day trip to Monuriki Island where the famous movie "Cast Away" was shot with Tom Hanks.

3 nights Los Angeles, California

It turns out AirBnb is the most affordable option - decent quality at a reasonable price. Hotels are generally expensive (unless you are OK to stay in the airport area). Drive up to "Griffith Observatory" for a great lookout point over the city. Also drive through Hollywoodland for some nice views on the Hollywood Sign. Don't miss out strolling at along Santa Monica with its pier and definitely stop at "Pink's" for its famous hot dogs. If you have time, visit Universal Studios.

3 nights in Moorea, French Polynesia

I suggest to continue to Moorea right on arrival in Tahiti (either by ferry or plane). Stay in Tahiti at the end of your trip in order to catch a long-haul flight out of French Polynesia. That way you make sure you won't miss your flight out. For a great lookout point, hike up the hill between the Sofitel Moorea Beach of Temae and the airport. There should be a (white) flag up there. Another great lookout point is the (more famous) "Magic Mountain Overlook" in the Opunohu Bay. The best beach is indeed the one of Temae (where the Sofitel is located). So it's definitely worth staying at the Sofitel which is a bit cheaper than similar hotels on Bora Bora. On the road behind the hotel is another very famous lookout point onto the beautiful bay.

3 nights in Bora Bora, French Polynesia

You may stay in one of the expensive hotels (to treat yourself nicely) or rent an AirBnB. Rent a scooter for a day to drive around the main island, but you will only get to enjoy Bora Bora when doing an official Lagoon Tour incl. lunch on one of the motus or when booking lunch, dinner or a Spa treatment in one of the fancy hotels. Give them a call or send them an e-mail to see which hotel offers such day trip possibilities. The whole setting is simply gorgeous!

3 nights in Maupiti, French Polynesia

One word: AMAZING! You have arrived in paradise. This is how Bora Bora looked like 30 years ago, without all the big overwater bungalow resorts. Go around the island by bike (it won't take you that long, easily doable with a long beach stop in one day) and, if you are looking for a great lookout point, I suggest you climb to the highest peak of Maupiti! This view is worth all the efforts! Book your accommodation early since the small pensions (many of them are located on the small motus surrounding the main island) can quickly get fully booked.

1 night in Tahiti, French Polynesia

I would say one night is enough. Most long-haul flights leave in the eveneing which gives you a full day to drive either all the way around the island and enjoy the beautiful landscape and check out the world-famous surfing spot of "Teahupoo"or, what I would suggest, to visit the huge waterfalls of "Faarumai" on the north-east side of Tahiti. You may also want to stop at the black beach of the "Pointe Venus" on the way back towards Papeete.

3 nights in Tokyo

We stayed one night in Hong Kong on the way, but I suggest you focus on Tokyo. Tokyo has so much to offer and for great views, I suggest to do the Hakone Day Tour. You'll be able to enjoy the great lookout points over Mount Fuji. Another great lookout point is from the City Hall of Tokyo, a govermental building. And the best: It's free!

1 night in Nouméa

The flight from Tokyo arrives in La Tontouta Airport around midnight, but the domestic flights depart at Magenta Airport only in the morning (40 min drive between the airports). We have rented a car for approximately 8 hours and slept inside the car on the parking of La Tontouta and later on in Magenta again. Other option: Stay another night in Nouméa. But renting a place for 8 hours is really not worth it (too much hassle and cost considering the few hours of sleep).

3 nights in Ile des Pins

Make it at least 3 nights. So many beaches, islands and lagoons to discover! Stay south near Kotu Bay and don't miss out on visiting the "Piscine Naturelle" and walk up the river until "Le Méridien Resort". Also we suggest to do a day tour to nearby islands and sandbanks - amazing!

4 nights in Lifou

Stay 4 nights hereon Lifou, because the island is rather big and driving distances are quite far. A lot of beautiful beaches to spend some hours at and one of our favourites is "Kiki Beach" including a 1 hour hike through the forest to reach it. You can also visit a botanical garden and stunning cliffs in the north of the island.

3 nights in Ouvéa

Ouvéa is an atoll, hence the waters and beaches are among the best in the world. Book a tour to the "Falaise de Lékiny" a sacred site which you should visit only with a local guide named Félix - here is his number: +687 925512.

2 nights in Nouméa

Nothing much to do in Nouméa, but it is a pretty city with many ships around its harbours and walking around the town to explore it a bit. You may want to visit the "Tjibaou Cultural Center" - stunning architecture seen from afar. Beaches do not compare to those of the islands. So it's wort to stay one full day before moving on to Australia.

3 nights in Sydney

Where to start... walk around the Opera House and Royal Botanic Gardens. Then walk accross the Harbour Bridge and take a public ferry back. Walk along The Rocks as well and take the ferry to Manly Beach if you have time. You may spend the whole day there walking until North Head. If you're lucky and depending on the season (October) you may sea wales! Have breakfast at "The Grounds of Alexandria" - one of the best breakfast experiences I have ever had.

4 nights in Sydney, Australia

We stayed in Sydney 1 night before Uluru and 3 nights after. Depending on how your international flight arrives, you may want to connect right away or also stay 1 night in Sydney. We have arrived late and also preferred to sleep a night in a bed before connecting. Sydney has so much to offer! You can see some recommendations in above itinerary about New Caledonia, but there is much more to do.

3 nights in Uluru (Ayers Rock), Australia

I would say 2 full days are enough. The heat and the mosquitoes are almost unbearable, but the view on the Ayers Rock is stunning - definitely rent a car from/to the airport and drive to Ayers Rock during different times of the day. I like to see it during the day in the bright sun as well as during sunrise and sunset. During the day, relax in aircon rooms or at the hotel pool (but don't expect it to be refreshing). You may also want to hike the Olgas (a nearby rocky mountain chain) during morning hours (be back latest by mid-day). This hike is definitely worth it!! Amazing views!

3 nights in Melbourne, Australia

Visit the city itself and do a day-trip to the Great Ocean Road. The landscape is so pretty and the Twelve Apostels a world-famous site one should definitely visit when in the area. You may also want to do a day trip to see some Koalas and Kangoroos or the famous Penguins ob Philip Island. Don't miss out on having an original Flat White Coffee in Melbourne!

2 nights in Hong Kong

The usual gateways from/to Europe are in Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong. If you haven't visited Hong Kong before, you may want to extend your stay - so much to visit! Our "must-dos" are a ride up to Victoria Peak (and a 40 min walk around the peak with gorgeous lookout points along the way) as well as a trip to the "Golden Buddha" on Lantau Island. Amazing views guaranteed!  But again, Hong Kong is so much more!
