4 nights in Bermuda

Bermuda is amazing! We had never expected the place to be so beautiful, so we were really pleasantly surprised! If you arrive late (like we did) and also in general, we recommend to stay in beautiful St. Goeroge's. This little town is just so charming. However, it's a bit of a drive to the beautiful beaches in the south. So you might prefer to stay closer to the beaches, then stay anywhere along the south coast. Our favourite beaches were the many small coves at the south end of Warwick Long Bay. Definitely rent a scooter for a day or two to check out the whole island. It's also worth to visit the National Museum of Bermuda - you will enjoy exploring the fort and views (not just the museum itself). The main building and walls of the fort also kind of serve as a lookout point onto the ocean and parking cruise ships.

1 night in New York

It's nice to stay a night in New York (or Boston or Miami) since you anyway have to transfer there to reach Bermuda. We went via New York since there are most flights to reach Bermuda and the connection on the outbound was perfect. We did not have to stay overnight in New York on the outbound, but could connect right away on Jetblue to Bermuda. On the way back, it was easier to stay overnight in New York, even though also possible to connect right away. If you stay only one night in New York (and don't extend your stay), we suggest you stay in Manhattan. This in order to enjoy the center of New York right away (and don't have to spend much more time commuting). We found the Moxy Hotels had some pretty decent rates (considering the location).

We recommend to stay on the French side of the island - much more charming, less developed and more beautiful nature compared to the Dutch side. The Dutch side is more traffic, casinos and big hotel complexes. Definitely rent a car to explore the whole island. On the outbound, we had to stay one night to catch the ferry to St. Barth the next morning. Perfect place to stay is directly at the marina at Oyster Bay. We stayed at the "Sol Hotel" so we could just walk down to the harbour the next morning. Our favourite place and a "must do" is the hike to "Baie des Petites Cayes". The views from some lookout points along the way are just stunning - such a beautiful unspoiled spot! Park your car at Anse Marcel and start the hike! Also spend one evening at Grande Case - a cute and pretty village with French colonial charm and excellent restaurants.

3 nights in St. Barthélemy (St. Barth)

St. Barth is expensive, but it's so worth the visit! You may find some affordable AirBnBs online, but maybe you just want to treat yourself nicely and stay at an awesome hotel. We have stayed at "Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa" and it was simply amazing! Rent a car for a day or two and explore beaches like "Plage de Saline" (beautiful bay behind dunes and bushes) and "Colombier" (another unspoiled beach). Be aware that roads on St. Barth are quite hilly, but the views from some lookout points along the way are definitely worth the drive! One more tip is a hike to some rock pool at the far east tip of St. Barth - gorgeous!

Zoom in to see the Caribbean flights closer

1 night in Miami

Flights from Europe leave too late to connect straight away. Always one night in Miami is required to fly on to St. Thomas. Stay in an airport hotel, unless you want to visit Miami - but we don't think it is worth for one night to head all the way to Miami Beach - you would get there too late.

3 nights on St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Spend 1 full day as a day trip on St. John (the neighbouring island). You can take the car ferry (a barge) to get there including your car. The rest of the time, spend it on St. Thomas. Visit the lookout points at the mountain top as well as Drake's seat - gorgeous views! Also spend an afternoon and Lindquist Beach (our favourite one on St. Thomas).

For more details on the US Virgin Islands, check out our blog-entry.

3 nights on Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

It's a beautiful little gem - the island of Virgin Gorda with it's world-famous beach called "The Baths". Spend not just one afternoon there, but one or two days hiking through the big rocks from bay to bay. It reminded us so much of Seychelles! Also rent a ar for one day (is enough) to drive north on the other side of the mountain. There's a beautiful lookout point with restaurant called "Hog Heaven" - don't miss it, so worth to go! You'll have a view until "Necker Island" which is owned by Richard Branson, the founder of the Vrigin brand with its Virgin Atlantic Airways.

3 nights on Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Three days is enough, but worth to spend on Tortola. Less developed than St. Thomas and even steeper roads make this a special place to visit! You can do a hike in the forest covered mountains and spend an afternoon on one of the many beaches, "Smuggler's Cove" among our favourite ones. Tortola is a lush-green and beautiful island!

1 night in San Juan, Puerto Rico

You may want to make it two nights, but also with one night (and almost one entire day) you can see all important sights in the city. If you want to soak in the Caribbean / latin vibe more, stay longer. Don't miss out on visiting both forts "San Felipe del Morro" and "Castillo de San Cristobal". Especially the latter one has some great lookout points onto the city and ocean. Also have a view down onto "La Perla". Best is to have the view from the restaurant "La Garita" (or right next to it) which has a terrace serving as excellent lookout point.

4 nights in Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

We recommend to stay a bit longer on Antigua. The island has so many beaches and lookout points to discover! Also small hikes are possible. Our favourite spot: Shirley Heights in the South with one of the best lookout points in the Caribbean - come here for sunset, but also during the day and soak in the mesmerising view!

For more details on Antigua, check out our blog-entry.

3 nights on Barbados

Barbados beaches are nice, even though many had quite some sea weed (the only place with sea weed during our trip through the Caribbean). Tourism infrastructure is well developed, but hotel prices rather on the expensive side. The island's landscape is rather flat and therefore not as interesting as the other islands we have visited. There are some interesting sites, but you mostly need to pay entrance fees (and not little!). We did like it in Barbados, but it's not our favourite Caribbean island. If you just want to relax in an accommodation nearby a beach, no need for a car - even though we recommend to rent one at least for 2 days to explore the island.

1 night on St. Vincent, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Our plane from Barbados arrived at night and the ferry to Bequia left morning. So we stayed one night on St. Vincent. It seems like there is not much to do - or let's say not as interesting as the Grenadines - so make it your jump-off point, but don't spend your entire vacation on St. Vincent!

3 nights on Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Bequia is a pretty, quiet, clean island paradise. Beaches are not as white (and waters not as blue) as on other islands in the Southern Grenadines, but Bequia is easily accessible (one hour by ferry several times a day from St. Vincent) and you can do day-trips to nearby Mustique Island or the Tobago Cays in the Southern Grenadines. You may book with "The Friendship Rose" or with Definitely worth a stay! We love the Grenadines!

3 nights on St. Lucia

You have to see that view from north of Soufrière towards the Pitons - it's simply WOW! This view alone was a highlight on our Caribbean tour! Waters are super clear even though beaches are not the most beautiful. Anyway, the hikes and views from various lookout points onto Gros Piton and Petit Piton alone are worth the visit - don't miss out on hiking the "Tet Paul Nature Trail" and take a bath in the sulfur pools of the Soufrière volcano! Rent a car, it'll be worth it to drive around, also the pretty Marigot Bay is worth a visit. If you like plants and flowers, we recommend to visit the Botanical Garden in Soufrière - a beautiful one!

5 nights on Martinique

Martinique is not the most beautiful Caribbean island in terms of landscapes, but worth a visit and spend more time here to discover the island more thoroughly. The infrastructure (supermarkets, roads etc.) is excellent thanks to French and EU money (the island is officially part of the EU). Best beach is definitely "Plage des Salines" - head here to enjoy the afternoon sun! Twice a week, Air Caraibes is flying from Martinique via Guadeloupe (about 40 min waiting on ground in an airside terminal building) to your next destination which is Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic!

How many days in each location? What to do there?

2 nights in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Few tourists only come to Santo Domingo. And even less stay overnight (some come a a day trip from La Romana or Punta Cana). You won't need more than 2 nights (one full day) to explore the small, but charming old town of Santo Domingo. It's very much worth to stay overnight, only then you get to experience the city with it's charming restaurants, parks and lit buildings at night. We are so happy we stayed here for a couple of days. Definitely sleep in the Zona Colonial which is the old town of Santo Domingo (not outside!) and visit the "Faro a Colon" during the day. It's a short taxi or Uber ride from the Zona Colonial and this building has an impressive architecture and a great lookout point at its top! Enjoy the view!

3 nights in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Treat yourself nicely for a few days - hotels are more affordable than on other Caribbean Islands and you get all-inclusive with one of the best, largest, whites, finest sand beaches we have seen in the Caribbean. Yes, it's super touristy, but it's beautiful and worth to stay here! Get pampered after so many AirBnBs and before you move on to Colombia. We suggest to do a walk to the north end of Bavaro Beach (past the Hard Rock Hotel) where the hotels end. The beach is unspoiled and not many tourists walk until here - pure paradise!

3 nights in Medellin, Colombia

Medellin is so energetic, a thriving population and so much to explore! Take a guided tour through the Comuna 13 and a day-trip to "Guatapé" and "El Penol" (that  high rock in the middle of a dam-made island landscape). Also, our personal travel tip, do the hike up to the "Cerro de las Tres Cruces"! The hike starts exactly here (we suggest to go there by Uber). It takes approximately 1 hour up to the hilltop with amazing lookout points and views on the way. Seeing Medellin from the surrounding mountains is so enjoyable! Don't miss on trying out some of the hip restaurants in El Poblado and if you need a haricut, we can highly recommend "El Garage Barber Shop".

3 nights in Bogota, Colombia

Bogota is just great! Some people say it's not worth to visit, but we completely disagree. See our South America itineraries for more information on Bogota!

3 nights in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia

Cartagena de Indias is one of our favourite cities in the world - it definitely is the most beautiful! See our South America itineraries for more information on Cartagena!

4 nights on Curacao

Curacao is much drier than the other Caribbean Islands (at least during the month of February when we have visited) - but it seems it's generally much drier. It's so close to Venezuela and Colombia, just a very different corner of the Caribbean! Curacao has plenty of beautiful coves with white sand beaches and one of the most turquoise waters we have seen in the Caribbean. Renting a car is definitely recommended and driving around the north near Christoffelpark is just so beautiful. The landscape with its cactuses, especially close to sunset, looks surreal. Of course, spend an afternoon or morning (not during the hot lunchtime sun) strolling through the capital town of Willemstad with its world-famous colorful houses - not many Caribbean islands have so beautiful towns. Have dinner at "De Visserij" which is an experience for itself.
